The République class was a class of two pre-Dreadnought ironclads of the French Navy.
Contents |
The République marked a significant evolution in the design of French ironclads, with less significant tumblehome than her predecessors, better sailing qualities, larger size, and more firepower. The launch of HMS Dreadnought rendered the class less valuable, yet the ships served during the First World War.
The design was further improved with the closely related Liberté class battleship.
The Republique was comissioned in 1906. In 1910, a torpedo accidentally launched from her sistership struck her, damaging her hull. she was moored near the Liberte when she exploded, and her hull was again damaged, alogn with several crew members being injured. She saw minimal service in World War I and was scrapped in 1921.
Patrie was launched in 1907, and soon after, a pipe in her boiler burst, scalding several workers. In 1910, she accidentally fired a torpedo at her sistership, the Republique. After coastal defence service in World War I she was disarmed and used as a torpedo training vessel before being scrapped in 1928.
